A Mothers' Day Tribute to Aunt Loa

As I thought about what to share this week, one story in particular stood out to me.  I grew up with some incredible Aunts and Uncles. With today being Mothers' Day and May being the month of Memorial Day, I felt a tribute to Aunt Loa was in store as we turn to the Mavin & Loa branch this week.

Aunt Loa's life is such a wonderful example of Mothering to me.  I still remember where I was when I learned of her passing earlier that morning.  I was at work doing therapy for my speech/language patients at Primary Children's.  I was so distraught I had to leave to go home.  Growing up, we spent a lot of time playing games there.  Sherilyn and I shared a booth at a crafter's boutique in Sandy in my twenties.  Aunt Loa made the cutest ceramic rocking horse to go in the nursery when I had Steven.  I could go on...

Last week Sherilyn shared a picture after my post about Becky that I want to include in todays email.  Aunt Loa was a big part of all of our lives growing up.  We always knew she loved us because of how she treated us and served us.

Mom Would Be Here

By Sherilyn Mills Hirschi

When my dad went through the temple for the first time, we just had a really strange and difficult session. One woman had a coughing fit, and we paused everything for her to get a drink. We had to pause while an older man struggled to change his clothes. People forgot things, and that delayed us more.

All I could think about was the festivities planned right after the temple experience and friends and family would be waiting for us. We couldn’t have any more distractions!

I was suddenly struck by the thought of my mom and her selflessness in serving and putting others first. I had the distinct thought that this is where she would be and a strong peaceful feeling entered my heart. She would be bringing this woman a drink of water and helping this man as he struggled with the temple clothes. I also knew that this is where I would find her when I was struggling: doing simple acts of kindness.

I hope you all make today a special day for those who mother you.  Happy Mothers' Day to the women in my life who have been there for me!

Remember - you can see the past emails on the blog at https://MillsFamilyBook.blogspot.com

I am still accepting and receiving stories so keep them coming.  I should probably wind this up by the end of this month if I'm going to have books ready by August.

Until next time,

Valerie
